Jo Koy remembers the high of receiving a standing ovation from a national television audience…
“I was holding two jobs, one from 7 a.m. to 10 or 11 a.m. at Borders Bookstore, the other from noon to around 9:30 p.m. at Nordstrom Rack. Earlier I had participated in a ‘New Faces’ segment of the Montreal Comedy Festival and no sooner had I gotten off the stage than I was approached by the talent scouts for Jay Leno’s ‘Tonight Show,’ ” said Koy.FULL STORY
Comedian Jo Koy has a thing for Gucci.
It’s not quite what he would call “an addiction,” but he cannot get enough of whatever Gucci is doing these days. It wasn’t always like this, though.
“It got to the point where I didn’t buy anything from Gucci, it was so ugly, and then all of the sudden, the past two years, I don’t know who the designer is over there, but he’s just got his head on straight,”FULL STORY
“I’m half-white and half-Filipino. Which means my dad was in the military,” he cheekily begins.
After a divorce, his mother raised him and his siblings alone because she was “tough – maybe a little too tough, sometimes it was borderline illegal”.
He finds a rich vein of comedy recounting his upbringing at the hands of this frugal, no-nonsense mum, who disapproved of his desire to become a comedian instead of “a nurse or a mailman”.FULL STORY
Nearly two decades ago, Jo Koy took a photo of the $1,000 check he was given for his first paid gig to commemorate he had arrived.
“I remember thinking I was done and had made it,” Koy said. “I thought to myself, ‘I’m a feature at a big-time comedy club and I’m going to start getting booked everywhere.’
“It’s six years later and I was still stacking shoes in a stock room and working other part-time jobs to pay the bills.”FULL STORY
Jo Koy grew up watching cooking shows, but what he coveted wasn’t the latest recipe for lasagna or brownies.
“I remember just going, ‘I want a kitchen like that in my house,'” the comedian, 45, said. “Well, everything I used to dream about when I was a kid that I wanted my kitchen to look like, I’ve got.”
Koy bought his modern, single story, Studio City hilltop home in 2013. “I got lucky when I found this place,” he said.FULL STORY
Comedian Jo Koy grew up looking at the bright lights of the Las Vegas strip. He imagined one day performing his stand-up comedy to huge crowds at sold out shows.
This dream became reality this past year when Koy’s comedy tour brought him back to the city he called home, and every seat in the house was filled.FULL STORY
When Jo Koy was starting out in stand-up in the ’90s, he used to organize his own shows. Not much has changed for Koy on that front — but this time, for a major platform.
Last year, Koy used his own money to produce a comedy special, which he sold to Netflix in November. Four months later, the streaming giant released Koy’s special as part of its original content offerings.
The 45-year-old comic told NBC News that self-producing “Jo Koy: Live from Seattle” was the best decision he’s ever made in his career.FULL STORY
Jo Koy is the son of a Filipino immigrant mother and an American airman who left the family when Koy was 10. He’s also a college dropout and the divorced single father of a hormonal, 13-year-old son who often forgets to shower.
For Koy, family provides more material than it does stability. Naturally, that’s what he’s talking about in his latest Netflix special, Jo Koy: Live From Seattle.FULL STORY
Jo Koy just released his first hour special in five years and it’s a home run.
From the moment Koy walks out on stage, he lights up the theater with an energy that resonates with every joke. His material crushes while covering favorite topics like raising his son, his relationship with his mother, and how women process emotion.
The laughter comes in roars. It’s one of the best comedy specials out this year.FULL STORY
A decade ago, Jo Koy was just another up-and-coming comedian, trying to develop his act while working several day jobs.
Then Koy reaped a coveted invite to appear on NBC’s “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno,” where he received a rare standing ovation for his stand-up routine, which effectively launched his career.
“It changed my life,” says Koy, who appears 9 p.m. Saturday, May 16, at the Music Box at Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa.FULL STORY
Jo Koy has come a long way from his modest beginnings at a Las Vegas coffee house. As one of today’s vastly growing stand-up comedians, Koy sells-out comedy clubs and theaters across the nation with his infectious, explosive energy onstage. The comedian pulls inspiration from his family, specifically his son, that inspires humor across all boundaries.
Koy, who was raised in Tacoma, WA, credits his mother for his comedic and acting talents. She encouraged him to participate in school talent shows and to hold impromptu performances for his family and friends. This loving support led to performances at a Las Vegas coffee house, and inspired a move to Los Angeles.
In 2005, Koy had the “opportunity of a lifetime,” when he performed on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. He became one of a select few comics to receive a standing ovation on the show.
Since then, Koy has had two highly-rated and successful comedy specials on Comedy Central, Don’t Make Him Angry and Lights Out. In 2017, Koy will be releasing his 3rd comedy special, Jo Koy: Live from Seattle as a Netflix Original on March 28th world-wide.
Today, the comedian tours across the nation, and can be heard as a weekly guest on the popular podcast, The Adam Carolla Show. Koy recently joined the Podcast One family and host’s the weekly podcast, The Koy Pond. For more info on the podcast and tour dates, please visit: Jokoy.com.
